Exclusions in Practice

Book NowNew-User-Request-form-2025New-User-Request-Form-Governors-05.2025

Overview

As part of their strategic role, Governors may be required to sit on a number of formal Governor Panels, including ones that consider pupil exclusions.

Best practice recommends that at least one of the panel participants has attended up to date training in order to ensure both an efficient panel process and that Governors are able to make an effective, strategic contribution to the panel’s decision making.

This interactive course blends the theory behind the exclusion process with a practical exercise which
allows experiences to be shared and skills rehearsed. It is an excellent follow on and a chance to consolidate the ‘Exclusion Training for Governors’ course but equally can be taken as a stand alone course too.

This course is for governors, trustees, senior school leaders and pastoral managers of maintained schools and academies.

Description

Led by an experienced school exclusions expert, this course includes the following elements:

Exclusions quiz. Based on the pre-reading of an exclusions information document
circulated in advance and, for those governors who have undertaken exclusion training
in the past, recollections of their previous course. This is followed by a Q&A session
where any questions governors might have regarding the exclusion process are
addressed.

The Independent Review Panel. This part of the course is designed to give governors
an greater insight into what they can expect if a case is taken to the IRP. This is
particularly important as figures show that parents are increasingly likely to refer to the
IRP and the number of quash and direct verdicts is rising

Rehearsal of a fictitious exclusion hearing. The related
exclusion report is circulated to participants in advance for them to read before the
course. Governors indicate whether they would uphold the head’s decision to exclude
or not at various points as the evidence unfolds. The case is then explored by the course
facilitator playing the head teacher and replying to questions the governors come up
with.
